...locally heavy rainfall possible today with much colder air by
sunday...

a strong low pressure system over the lower mississippi river valley
will move northeast into the southern appalachian region by this
evening. widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms will move
across the tennessee river valley today and tonight...with locally
heavy rainfall possible in some areas. widespread rainfall totals of
one to two inches are expected...with locally higher amounts up to
four inches possible...mainly across the cumberland plateau...
southeast tennessee and extreme southwest north carolina.

in addition...colder air will move into the southern appalachian
region on sunday...with scattered snow showers possible across the
higher elevations above 2500 feet. a light snow accumulation of 1 to
3 inches will be possible across the higher elevations of southwest
virginia and east tennessee...mainly above 2500 feet.
