...significant snow or a mix of wintry precipitation expected
today and tonight...
.strong winds a few thousand feet into the atmosphere will
transport moisture from the gulf of mexico into the cold air mass
that covers much of the southeastern u.s. snow will continue to spread
across the area today...then warmer air aloft will turn some of the
precipitation into sleet and rain. cold pockets of air at some
locations may experience a brief period of light freezing rain as
well.
the precipitation will likely taper off during the afternoon...
and will start again at mostly the northern locations thursday
evening as another weaker system races through the area.
areas along and north of a line from oak ridge to greeneville
will have a better chance of getting mostly snow and sleet. the
heaviest amounts of snow should occur in the mountains along the
tennessee and north carolina line...the northern cumberland
plateau and across the higher terrain of southwestern virginia.
some light icing may accumulate up to around 1/10 inch...from any
periods of light freezing rain.
be sure to check road conditions and the latest forecasts before
traveling thursday through friday.

...winter weather advisory in effect until 4 am est friday...
the national weather service in morristown has issued a winter
weather advisory...which is in effect until 4 am est friday. the
winter storm warning has been cancelled.
snow will move from southeast tennessee into the rest of the area
by daybreak today and will continue much of the morning. sleet and
rain will likely mix in the precipitation at times later in the
morning and afternoon.
total snow accumulations through thursday evening may total from
2 to 5 inches.
a winter weather advisory means that periods of snow and sleet
are expected...but accumulations are expected to be light.
driving and walking may be difficult on untreated roadways and
sidewalks. be prepared for snow and ice covered roads and limited
visibilities. if you must travel...slow down and allow extra time
to reach your destination.

In Tennessee: Campbell, Claiborne, Morgan, Scott.
