urgent - winter weather message
national weather service morristown tn
1040 am est thu feb 1 2007
...light snow or a mix of wintry precipitation expected today...
.moisture continued to track northeast into much of the southern
appalachians this morning...although the heavier precipitation and
better lift was moving across the carolinas. thus...intensity and
coverage of significant snow...sleet or freezing rain had generally
been less than earlier expected for most of east tennessee and
southwest virginia.
some light snowfall...and brief periods of light sleet or freezing
rain had occurred across southeast tennessee into southwestern
north carolina. elsewhere...snow accumulations had mainly been a
dusting to around an inch.
a wintry mix will continue across much of the region...but less
amounts of any type are now anticipated. in addition...warmer air
aloft will work to gradually change the snow...sleet or freezing
rain to mostly rain in many areas this afternoon.
this has allowed some warning areas to be downgraded to advisories
...and a few of the advisories to be canceled.
a fast and weak upper level disturbance may brush the region tonight
...producing some light rain or snow again to parts of the area.
so...be sure to check road conditions and the latest forecasts
before traveling today through friday.
stay tuned to this station for later forecasts and statements
from your national weather service.
