...accumulating snowfall expected this afternoon into sunday 
morning... 
 
.a strong...fast moving low pressure system will move across the 
southern appalachian region late this afternoon and tonight. 
 
as the system approaches...light to moderate snow will spread 
east across much of the area. 
 
the heaviest snowfall is expected across northern parts of the 
cumberland plateau...the highest elevations of southwestern 
virginia and northeast tennessee...and the mountains of east 
tennessee with as much as 2 to 5 inches possible by sunday 
morning. an inch or two of snow could accumulate in parts of 
cherokee and clay counties of north carolina...mainly above 
3000 feet. 
 
a mix of rain and snow is expected over warmer southern tennessee 
valley locations this afternoon and possibly into early evening... 
before changing back to light snow. central valley locations of 
east tennessee may get from a dusting up to 2 inches of snowfall 
overnight...with accumulations of generally 1 to 3 inches expected 
in the snow advisory areas. 
 
actual snow amounts will depend on the track and speed of the low 
pressure system...which may change slightly as this winter 
weather system approaches. so...please stay tuned to noaa weather 
radio... or your favorite tv or radio station...for later 
statements and forecasts from your national weather service.

a snow advisory remains in effect from 5 pm this afternoon to 
11 am est sunday. 
 
light to moderate snow will develop this afternoon across the 
northern and smoky mountains of east tennessee...then linger 
throughout the night. the snow should diminish to scattered snow 
showers or flurries by sunday morning. total snowfall may range 
from 2 to 5 inches by late sunday morning ...with isolated heavier 
amounts possible above 4000 feet. 
 
a snow advisory means that periods of snow are expected or 
occurring...but accumulations are expected to be light.  driving 
and walking may be difficult on untreated roadways and sidewalks. 
be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities. if 
you must travel...slow down and allow extra time to reach your 
destination.
