...light freezing rain possible around sunrise across southwest north
carolina and far eastern tennessee...

...another chance for wintry precipitation this weekend across the
entire region...

cold air...which is actually close to normal for this time of year...
will remain in place across the southern appalachian region through
the weekend. in addition...an active southern jet stream across the
deep south will continue to spread moisture towards the region
beginning late tonight...and again on the weekend.

an area of low pressure will develop just off the southeast atlantic
coast tonight...and then move north across georgia and the carolinas.
this system will spread moisture towards southwest north carolina and
far eastern tennessee late tonight after midnight...but precipitation
amounts should be light. with temperatures expected to be hovering
near or below freezing around sunrise...some light freezing rain will
be possible across southwest north carolina and far eastern
tennessee. only minor ice accumulations are expected...mainly on
bridges...overpasses...and other elevated objects such as trees and
power lines. temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by mid-
day in most areas.

a stronger low pressure system is expected to develop over the lower
mississippi valley late saturday night...and then track northeast
toward the southern appalachian region on sunday. this system would
bring much more gulf moisture northward into the region...with cold
air expected to remain in place. as a result...the rain...snow line
is expected to be located across the southern appalachian region...
which would complicate the actual types and amounts of wintry
precipitation. ultimately...precipitation types and amounts will
depend on the track...strength and timing of this system...which may
change somewhat over the next few days.

please stay tuned to noaa weather radio...or your favorite tv or
radio station...for later statements and forecast updates as these
systems develop.
