...light rain or a light wintry mix possible mainly this morning
across southwest north carolina as well as southeast and far
eastern tennessee...

...another chance for wintry precipitation late this weekend across
the entire region...

cold air...which is actually close to normal for this time of year...
will remain in place across the southern appalachian region through
the weekend. in addition...an active southern jet stream across the
deep south will continue to spread moisture towards the region
early today...and again on the weekend.

an initial round of moisture was spreading east this morning from
along and north of i-20 over alabama and georgia across the
carolinas. thus...most of the precipitation from this system was
just clipping parts of southeast tennessee into western parts of
north carolina. a very light wintry mix may affect extreme eastern
parts of tennessee and southwestern virginia as well this morning.

however...there does not appear to be a significant threat of much
measurable precipitation in our region today...and surface
temperatures in most areas were holding in the mid to upper 30s this
morning. motorists should still be alert for possible light icing on
bridges...overpasses and also on some roads in the higher elevations.

a stronger low pressure system is expected to develop over the lower
mississippi valley saturday night...and then track northeast toward
the southern appalachian region on sunday. this system would bring
much more gulf moisture northward into the region...with cold air
expected to remain in place. as a result...the rain...snow line is
expected to be located across the southern appalachian region...which
would complicate the actual types and amounts of wintry
precipitation. ultimately...precipitation types and amounts will
depend on the track...strength and timing of this system...which may
change somewhat over the next few days.

please stay tuned to noaa weather radio...or your favorite tv or
radio station...for later statements and forecast updates as the
weekend draws closer.
