...wintry precipitation possible this weekend across the region...
cold air will remain in place across the southern appalachian
region as a low pressure system develops over the lower mississippi
valley saturday night. this system will track northeast toward the
southern appalachian region on sunday...bringing moisture from the
gulf of mexico. the precipitation is expected to begin late
saturday night and sunday morning...possibly as snow...sleet or
freezing rain. the precipitation is expected to remain light during
this time. warmer air is expected to build into the area through
the day on sunday...which will likely change the precipitation to
all rain. the depth of sub-freezing air that will be in place on
sunday morning remains in question...so the actual precipitation
types are uncertain at this time. slight changes in the
track...strength and timing of this system can lead to higher or
lower precipitation amounts than currently forecast. locations that
are most likely to see some frozen precipitation on sunday morning
will be in southwest virginia...northeast tennessee...and the
tennessee mountains.
please stay tuned to noaa weather radio...or your favorite tv or
radio station...for the latest statements and forecast updates as this
weather system draws closer.
