...wintry weather returns wednesday night into thursday evening...
.cold air over the southern appalachians will interact with
moisture streaming out of the gulf of mexico to produce a wintry
mix across the region late wednesday night into thursday evening.
the warm moist gulf air will lift over the cold air in place
wednesday night producing snow across the southern areas...
including chattanooga...by daybreak.
this snow will spread across the rest of the area during the day
thursday. during the morning...the southern part of the area will
have a short transition period of mixed freezing rain and sleet
before changing over to all rain. the northern plateau will remain
all snow for most of the day thursday. this transition to rain will
spread up the valley during the day...and by late evening many
areas will see a mixture of mainly rain...sleet...freezing
rain...and snow. higher elevations of the northern cumberland
plateau...southwest virginia...and the mountain areas of east
tennessee will likely remain all snow during this period.

thursday evening...
the national weather service in morristown has issued a winter
storm watch...which is in effect from late wednesday night
through thursday evening.
snow beginning around sunrise thursday with total accumulations of
2 to 8 inches possible mainly in the higher elevations.
a winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant
snow...sleet...and/or ice accumulations. future driving
conditions may become hazardous...so continue to monitor the
latest forecasts.

In Tennessee: Blount, Carter, Cocke, Greene, Johnson, Monroe, Sevier, Unicoi.
