...wintry precipitation expected late wednesday night into
thursday morning...

a cold air mass will remain over the southern appalachian region on
wednesday night...as moisture associated with a developing low
pressure system over the gulf coast moves north across the region.
this moisture will fall as a mixture of snow...sleet and freezing
rain across southeast tennessee and southwest north carolina after
midnight wednesday night. mostly snow will then spread north across
the rest of east tennessee and southwest virginia. this wintry
precipitation should gradually change over to rain by thursday
afternoon across the great tennessee valley and southwest north
carolina...as warmer air slowly moves northeast up the valley.
however...mostly snow...mixed with some sleet and freezing rain...
will likely continue throughout the day on thursday across southwest
virginia and the mountains of east tennessee. right now...it appears
that light snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches will be possible in
the great tennessee valley thursday morning...before the transition
to rain in the afternoon. in addition...some light ice accumulations
will be possible thursday morning across southeast tennessee and
southwest north carolina.
