...significant snow or a mix of wintry precipitation expected
late tonight into thursday night...

.strong winds a few thousand feet into the atmosphere will
transport moisture from the gulf of mexico into the cold air mass
that covers much of the southeastern u.s. snow will spread across
the area thursday...then warmer air aloft will turn some of the
precipitation into sleet and rain. cold pockets of air at some
locations may experience a brief period of light freezing rain as

the precipitation will likely taper off during the afternoon...and
will start again at some locations thursday evening as another
weaker system races through the area.

areas along and north of a line from oak ridge to greeneville will
have a better chance of getting mostly snow and sleet. the heaviest
amounts of snow should occur in the mountains along the tennessee

higher terrain of southwestern virginia. some light icing may
accumulate up to around 1/10 inch...from any periods of light
freezing rain.
