the nws storm prediction center has issued a 
severe thunderstorm watch for portions of 
 
northern and eastern alabama 
northern and central georgia 
far western north carolina 
southern middle and eastern tennessee 
 
effective this sunday afternoon and evening from 1210 pm until 
800 pm cdt. 
 
hail to 1 inch in diameter...thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 
mph...and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas. 
 
the severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 75 
statute miles either side of a line from 45 miles northwest of 
huntsville alabama to 50 miles south of athens georgia.  for a

remember...a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are 
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch 
area. persons in these areas should be on the lookout for 
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements 
and possible warnings. severe thunderstorms can and occasionally 
do produce tornadoes. 
 
discussion...tstms are strengthening attm over middle tn along gust 
front left from overnight storms in w tn.  other storms are forming 
along segment of weak cold front over srn east tn and over the 
mountains of n ga.  steep low level lapse rates and hi pws will be 
supportive of wet microbrusts.  vwp data show weak unidirectional 
nnw flow in the 850-700 mb layer.  coupled with axis of strongest 
low lvl heating/confluence along and ahead of front...storms should 
move/develop mainly se...and may organize into one or two short 
bands. 
 
aviation...a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft 
to 1 inch. extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. 
a few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 550. mean storm motion 
vector 30020.
